Part 1 - Mastering the Basics of Touch (November 4)

  • Drops. 3rd, 5th, 7th… Setting a consistent, repeatable foundation with the easiest relationship to the ball and the bounce. Underspin, topspin and placement.
  • Dinks: Underspin, Topspin, and Power Dinking. Develop versatility in your dinking game. Underspin: How to hit it with consistency and in ways that slide on your opponent’s side. Topspin: More and more popular–can create more problems for your opponents. Power Dinking: taking the passive out of dinking and making them deliberate and penetrating.
  • Half Drives. A shot in-between drive and drop that’s sometimes just what the doctor ordered.

Part 2 - Advanced Techniques and Strategy (November 11)

  • Drop Shot Volleys - The paddle control and feel to hit well-timed drop shot volleys.
Resets. Learn to reset the pace of the game when under pressure.
  • Transition Zone - When asked,“what’s the most important skill for the 4.0 player to work on to improve?” Ben Johns answered, “Mastering the transition zone.” How to “smooth out” and get comfortable in this important zone for high level play.

Creating a stable, repeatable foundation for each shot will improve your consistency and allow you to maneuver the ball wherever you want. This strategic approach is the chess component of pickleball, crucial for high-level play.
