Member Spotlight: Katherine Doolittle

Katherine Doolittle is no stranger in our community. With most of her career devoted to non-profit work, she has touched nearly every corner of our neighborhood with her generosity and spirit. Currently, Katherine channels her passion for outreach as the Director for Nevada County Home Path, where she works tirelessly to find shelter for unhoused youth and families.

But when she’s not making a difference through her professional work, you can find her on our pickleball courts, building community and spreading joy.

Katherine’s introduction to pickleball came through her husband, Jim, who first discovered the sport about four years ago. His enthusiasm for the game piqued her curiosity, and during the isolation of the COVID pandemic, she decided to join him on the courts. In those challenging times, pickleball offered them a much-needed escape from heartbreak and confinement, providing a safe and active way to connect with others.

However, the journey hasn’t always been smooth. That summer, Katherine suffered a serious shoulder injury on the court, a setback that dramatically altered her life. Despite undergoing surgery and a rigorous course of physical therapy, she found her confidence shaken and her movements restricted. Yet Katherine’s determination shone through as she resolved to return to the game she loved.

With a heart full of resolve and a willingness to start anew, Katherine sought guidance from our pro, John Hendrickson. Through his lessons and clinics, she began her gradual return to pickleball last summer. The support and encouragement from our dedicated Ambassadors, Katie Carter and Bobbi Gudicelli, during our Beginner Women’s program this spring and ongoing Beginners Open Play, helped her rebuild her confidence on the court.

Inspired by her own journey and the strength of the community around her, Katherine started a women’s group with the simple yet powerful motto: “Have fun, be nice, and play without judgment.” This group of five has since blossomed into a vibrant community of twelve women who gather every Friday afternoon for pickleball and camaraderie, affectionately calling themselves the “Margahreita Mammas” in honor of their post-game gatherings.

Though Katherine continues to face occasional challenges with her confidence, her unwavering commitment to showing up for others speaks volumes. She embraces John’s philosophy of “Play with Thought” and adds her own touch of grace to both the game and her life.

We are incredibly fortunate to have someone like Katherine in the South Yuba Pickleball Club community. Her story is one of resilience, kindness, and community spirit—qualities that enrich us all. Thank you, Katherine, for being a beacon of inspiration and a cherished member of our club.
