INTRODUCING…
SYC SWIM PROGRAM DIRECTOR, KATIE
We are excited to introduce you to our new swim program that brings additional value and scalability for various swim levels as well as competitive swim. Meet our new Swim Program Director, Katie. You may recognize her as a Swim Instructor from previous seasons as well as a Personal Trainer here at SYC. This year, she stepped into the role of Director for the Swim Program and brought a whole new training program.
Swimming has been a part of Katie’s life since a young age. She first learned how to swim with the Grass Valley Penguins at age seven years old. From there, she went on to join the Orca Swim Team. In High School, she did both swim team and water polo for her freshman year. An unfortunate knee injury forced her to withdraw, but not to be sidelined from the sport she loves she continued to help coach the boys’ water polo team and went on to manage the polo team in college.
In her junior year of high school, Katie lifeguarded at Memorial Pool and began teaching swim lessons. She has since taught swimming at three other facilities in the Santa Cruz and San Jose area. Her swim lessons have included everything from Mommy and Me classes to stroke technique and adapted lessons. Her passion for swimming and water polo have only grown over the years and she brings this love for the sport to her coaching.
ABOUT OUR SWIM PROGRAMS…
LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM
Learn to Swim is a three-level program structured to get children comfortable and safe in the water. In these three levels, children learn how to crawl along the wall and exit from any point of the pool, become comfortable going under water and blowing bubbles, float on their stomachs and back, kick on their stomachs and backs, roll onto their back, and learn how to scoop their hands for a basic freestyle. Each level comes with a punch card indicating the skills they must learn and perform correctly to progress to the next level as well as a Certificate of Completion.
PERFORMANCE SWIM PROGRAM
Performance Swim is an optional advancement at the completion of Learn to Swim, Level 3, or by meeting the requirements below. This program teaches better technique and different strokes and includes four levels. The goal of these lessons is to master energy efficient strokes and prepare for swim team.
Entrance to Performance Swim is based on an assessment, or completion of Learn to Swim, Level 3. To enter this program, your child must be able to successfully complete two skills: 1. Swim a basic freestyle stroke, including roll overs to breath, for at least half the distance of the pool, and 2. Kick with roll overs the full distance of the pool.
In Level 1 of Performance Swim, students learn side breathing, and master freestyle and backstroke. Next, we introduce breaststroke, open turns, sit dives, and somersaults in the water. In Level 3, students master breaststroke and introduce butterfly, flip turns, and kneeling dives. In Level 4, we round out these lessons by mastering all the skills above as well as streamline breakouts, learning what turns go with each stroke, and finally, how to do a standing dive.
