TRAINER SPOTLIGHT: ROWAN

Inspired by Life’s Challenges
By Laura Stetser

DISCOVERING HIS CALLING…

It’s ironic in life that we often find our calling through our challenges. This is certainly the case for SYC Personal Trainer Rowan. It was through physical and mental health issues in his late teens that he discovered his passion, “Nutrition opened the door to wellness for me and has empowered me to take control of my health in a fun (and tasty) way.” Athletic his whole life, competing in sports and lifting weights for several years, he goes on to say, “Anyone who trains will begin to recognize how influential our fuel is when it comes to performance, health, and the overall feeling of wellbeing in and outside of the gym.”

INCREASING HIS KNOWLEDGE…

Today, Rowan is a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). He is also working on his Corrective Exercise Specialization and is currently a student at the California College of Ayurveda where he is studying to be an Ayurvedic Health Counselor. His hope is to “combine nutrition and fitness in a holistic way that empowers people to take control of their health and maintain it through an intimate understanding of themselves and how they interact with their environment.”

COACHING & TRAINING…

Rowan coaches team training classes at SYC, Ride & Ski Conditioning, and does personal training. His favorite part of coaching and personal training is seeing members feel good about themselves. “I can give anyone a workout that will kick their butt and make them sweat, but the real joy is seeing them smile and beam at the end of that workout, knowing that they showed up and got down to business… helping people push through that discomfort and be proud of themselves is a gift to me as much as it is to themselves.”

Some FUN FACTS  about Rowan:

→ He was born in the back of a car on the way to hospital (apparently, that doesn’t just happen in the movies)!

→ He speaks Spanish and likes to sing along with Spanish radio in the car.

→ His artistic outlet and medium is Origami.

→ Not surprisingly, he’s an active guy who enjoys (in addition to training) volleyball, pickleball, basketball and ping pong.

IN CONCLUSION…

We’ll conclude on a favorite quote he shared with us, a statement that speaks not only to physical fitness and training, but really life as a whole: “A ship is safe in harbor, but that’s not what ships are built for.” (Shedd, John).
